earth day 2009Earth Day 2009, April 22, will mark the beginning of The Green Generation CampaignTM which will also be the focus of the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2010. With negotiations for a new global climate agreement coming up in December, Earth Day 2009 must be a day of action and civic participation, to defend The Green GenerationTM’s core principles:

    • A carbon-free future based on renewable energy that will end our common dependency on fossil fuels, including coal.
    • An individual’s commitment to responsible, sustainable consumption.
    • Creation of a new green economy that lifts people out of poverty by creating millions of quality green jobs and transforms the global education system into a green one.

fluorescent bulbs saveFluorescent Bulbs Have Brilliant Future

    THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26 2009
    By Jackie Friedlander

Diana Reeke of Springfield had one big problem with her new chandelier. Despite its traditional appearance, it used only modern fluorescent bulbs. “And they are so bright it is hideous,” she told Roger Vasilas, owner of The Lamplighter lighting store in Alexandria. Was there any way to get rid of the glare? The bulbs could not be dimmed, he answered, but he could convert the fixture from fluorescent lighting to the familiar incandescent fashion.

Starting three years from now, he might find it difficult to say the same thing. Under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, all light bulbs sold must use 30 percent less energy than the current incandescent classics. By 2020, all bulbs will have to be 70 percent more efficient.

“Light is approximately 20 percent of the average household’s energy bill,” the Environmental Protection Agency explains. “This law could cut our nation’s electric bill by more than $10 billion per year.”

    By Times Staff

A new website called OneAlexandria has launched as a forum for city residents to share news and resources, connect with other citizens, and, according to the website, “Think globally, act locally and have fun.”

The site was developed as a tool for residents to build an online community that fosters “honesty, integrity, healthy habits, life-long education, successful commerce and stewardship of the natural environment,” according to website co-founder John Leary. OneAlexandria is seeking to be a forum where Alexandrians will share information, ideas and resources to make the city a better place, and have some fun while doing it.

A network of bloggers will comment on a variety of opinions and interests, and visitors are encouraged to post comments, ask questions, find volunteer opportunities and connect with others with common interests.

Former Sen. Allen Moves Firm to Old Town

    THURSDAY, MARCH 12 2009
    By Denise Dunbar

225px-george_allen_official_portraitFormer Senator George Allen is moving his consulting business from Washington, where he had been renting space, to Old Town.  Allen, a Mount Vernon resident who was Virginia’s governor from 1994-98, has also hired Paul Unger, his former Senate aide.  Unlike Allen, Unger is a registered lobbyist and is expected to do lobbying work for the firm.

Allen told Politico that the move should not be interpreted “one way or another” that he might seek public office again.  “When people ask, ‘Are you going to run again?’ I say, “Perhaps,’” Allen said.
Many people thought Allen would seek the Republican nomination for Governor in 2009.  When he declined to enter that race against Attorney General Bob McDonnell, speculation turned to a possible rematch in 2012 between Allen and Sen. Jim Webb, a Democrat who won by a razor-thin margin three years ago.

Allen said he bought an office in Virginia for practical reasons, as it is nearer his home.  “This is a market to be buying in,” quipped Allen, a notorious bargain hunter who is legendary for remembering the gas stations all around the state with the cheapest prices.  “I do like being in Virginia and operating out of Virginia.”

Allen is best known for his initiatives while governor that abolished parole for Virginia offenders and also reformed Virginia’s welfare system prior to the enactment of the federal “Temporary Assistance for Needy Families” act of 1996.  As senator, he received much credit for Republicans capturing 55 senate seats in the 2004 elections, when he was head of the Republican Senatorial Committee.
